I recently had an interesting conversation with our son who has just started his third year at Secondary School.
I asked him why he had dropped art as a subject and he told me that it was too boring..
"Why was it boring son," I asked dreading the answer..and remembering with gladness that our oldest son had followed an artistic career probably because of the interesting and relevant lessons taught to him by an artist primary specialist who constantly used art to enhance the school curriculum.
"Well mum we did boring stuff like drawing ellipses from a pile of cans and this exercise lasted for six weeks"..
Why don't we teach art regularly in schools ? From experience it seems to be now resigned to a discrete subject along with handwriting!!!i.e art and handwriting only have a small and insignificant place in the curriculum - not!!
"Mum if they showed us how to draw a dragon on the computer then I would have certainly taken art again,"
he said. Showing me speed draw. It seems to me that if you want to motivate pupils then you have to give them interesting work to do. My great example of this was the English teacher who always gave us wonderful short stories to read and scintillation poetry with hidden meanings. Such a teacher helps the pupil to think outside of the box and brings reality and feelings closer together.
What interests me just now is the graffiti I see locally which changes every day because the art is on the sides of the trains which park near to where we take the dogs a walk. I like the colours and the different text which is used. I feel that my technical skills on the computer will help me to make some interesting images over the next few weeks.. Its certainly more inspiring than looking at a pile of empty cans.
