Over the last few weeks my work schedule has stopped me from being creative.  Today however I have more time to spend just thinking.  As I was walking around the outside environment I was searching for a visual image which would uplift me and maybe even inspire me.  Yet again the images on the sides of huge trains did inspire me.  The artists only use unusual colours not out of a tube of paint.  I wondered if these artists just used what they had or did they find it somewhere else?  The art produced by these artists seem to reflect the essence of our last lecturer who said that we have to unlearn at times to be able to learn anew.
The words which were on the trains were unreadable but were they words or would they ever evolve into some other type of representation? What I mean is - why do they need to say something - the images are just beautiful in themselves.  Can I appreciate an image without being judgemental ?  Who are the people who make these art works? Is it therapy is it a hobby or is it a basic territorial activity.  Or do they enjoy it?
Does this art strengthen their identity?  Or all of the above?
I was working with some 3 S 6 boys in a special school.  I have learned that these young men have a lot to say about themselves and their hobbies really are important to them.  I also surmise that the young women have more of an outlet to be creative because of the wearing of fancy clothes and shoes etc.  I was alarmed at the huge variety of fancy shoes women can buy nowadays.  Whereas with men its just one or two pairs - my son has one pair of favourite trousers.  However I have several items of clothing.. I hope this makes sense - It seems that the female identity is very much to do with fashionable clothes and the image she projects , however men have to find  different ways to project their image with the standard suit and a change of tie being about the most expected from them!  This is an interesting thought which kind of ties in with the influence that design and art has on us all.
Gock Wan's face was on a poster in Sainsbury's- and he was giving us style advice - so maybe he is the exception !
