It has been great experience over the last few weeks going into work. Sometimes I am called out to cover classes of teachers who are indisposed for maybe a few hours. One was doing jury duty another was talking to parents. I seem to always get to do art in the classes. Maybe it is because I am only in in the afternoons! (Is art ever done in the mornings?)
One teacher asked "Are you OK with doing art?" I replied - yes!
Here is the list
Making paper portraits using unusual colours i.e blue for the skin colour. We used bright backing paper to start with - A4 size and then tore coloured pieces of gummed paper into oval shapes for the face and eyes and a triangle for the nose. Some pupils wanted to use a pencil to make the outline for the nose and eyes.
In the class were two visually impaired pupils and so very bright colours were obtained from the art cupboard to enhance their experience of learning.
At another school I helped to make Mother's Day cards. The template used was a teapot and it was placed onto an A4 card which was folded over and then cut out. The card opened at the lid of the teapot. The pupils then cut out symmetrical butterflies and flowers using folded post it notes. This combined art and maths together. I took this idea into my Nursery class and made the cards A3 size which was easier for the pupils to decorate. The results were stunning and all from a simple idea! I also took this idea to an upper Primary class who wanted to add the t-bags into the teapot. So I rushed out to buy some herbal tea bags and then we taped the t-bags inside. In the same class some of the pupils began making Mother's Day flowers using a cone shape and then making smaller cones to put inside the large cone. One pupil amazed me at his ability to focus on the job and to make a beautiful display - which looked like a bunch of lilies!
The use of cones at Easter was another example of mixing maths and art. In the recycling bin was a selection of cones made into Easter bunnies' faces or made of orange paper - carrots with tops. Ran out of Space!.

Excellent Blog! :)
