It was a lovely sunny day and went to the beachpark and Sam who is 9 really enjoyed running and climbing around. There were plenty of children all enjoying themselves. This made me think about how a classroom is run. A good classroom would have different activities set up and pupils would go and choose what they wanted to do.i.e. like a playground. Children learn when they play and of course this is how a nursery and other Early Years classes are set up. The children have a choice and enjoy the variety. There are no real boundaries for learning and pupils interact with each other and learn social skills along the way.
How difficult would it be for pupils to continue to have interesting activities in their classroom every day? I have noticed that these activities slowly disappear. Yet I have seen how pupils try to recreate fun activities
even at an older age. So why stop. I saw a fun way to go over maths by having a maths surgery question time.
While we were enjoying our ice creams I had an idea about ice cream and how you could use this subject to reach across most subjects of the curriculum.
So here is a rough plan of what I would facilitate on the first week back as it would tie in with the subject of holidays.
Ask pupils to tell what their favourite ice cream is.
Ask pupils to invent their own flavour.
Go and visit an ice cream parlour and write down all the types on sale.
Price up the ice - cream cones in a fair way. i.e how much should a double be if a single costs... much.
Look at the ingredients of ice cream and decide if it is a healthy product.
Look at the science of freezing and ask how does freezing preserve foods.
Create your own ice cream parlour in the home corner.
Make ice cream in the class- science and home economics. make jelly as both go together.
Discuss 3 d shapes i.e. cone cuboid i.e. thick wafer etc and of course spheres.
Make art using ice cream colours use splatter paint to decorate and represent sauce.
Use collage to make flakes and sprinkles.
Who invented ice cream and why when where etc.
Dental hygiene
Ice cream writing look at the graphics used on wafers and ice cream.
Make a chart of the pupils favourite ice cream
Look at the life of an ice cream van.
Play tunes common to ice cream vans and to do with the beach and holidays. i.e. the sun has got his hat on.
